Welcome to Digital Camera World’s guide to the best digital photo frames of 2019. Why display just one picture in a frame when you could have an ever-rotating display of hundreds, or even thousands, on your mantelpiece? That has long been the appeal of the digital photo frame.  Simply hook up your digital camera, insert a memory card, or, increasingly, wirelessly stream your images. The LCD screen then just shows your pictures for you – as a slide show, or as a single image that you can change as and when you fancy looking at something new. The latest wifi-enabled photo frames can access images from from a smartphone, or even pull them from Cloud storage (such as Dropbox) or from social media sites including Facebook and Instagram, for an endless slideshow of snaps.  Some of the early popularity of dedicated digital photo frames waned in recent years due to the rise of computer tablets. However, there has been a recent resurgence, as the wireless capability of the devices mean they are a great addition to your smart home set-up.  And, whatever the technology, they are still undoubtedly offer a great way to display your best shots. Like any frame, digital picture frames co...

Will the Tesla Cybertruck be able to beat gas trucks for home power supply?

Gas generators still own the portable, emergency home-backup power space. Ten years ago there was a lot of hope and hype for using all the energy stored inside EVs’ batteries to power your entire house, but it hasn’t come to pass. No EV maker will sell you a bidirectional charger, outside of Japan and a handful of small utility pilots. Meanwhile, the 2020 Ford F-150 will come with the option for its own built-in, onboard gas generator. And aftermarket companies, like Indiana’s Real AC power, offer sleek, chassis-integrated generator systems (pictured above) for internal combustion engine (ICE) trucks. EV makers ceded this space for unknown reasons. But now Tesla CEO Elon Musk has teased a 240V AC power outlet on the Cybertruck, something neither Rivian nor Bollinger have announced. We don’t know how many watts we can expect, though. So will the Tesla Cybertruck finally offer EV enthusiasts a path to navigate societal collapse? Or are we stuck with settling for “head’s up, you’re going to lose power” messages? North American homes, on average, draw slightly above 1kW on idle, but that spikes with appliances like microwaves, electric ovens, and dryers. An electric hot water tank w...

Characteristics of New Alloys for HPDC Structural Parts

Rheinfelden Alloys developed new alloys for the future generation of structural components in vehicle construction. This article shows all characteristics of AlMg4Fe2 and AlMg4Zn3Fe2 by discussing mechanical properties, metallurgy investigations, fatigue strength, static and dynamic 3-point bending test and joining techniques such as riveting and welding. Today’s castings are getting thinner and larger with more and more parts integrated. There is the need to offer highest strength and ductility for these crash relevant parts and the riveting process. Structural casting parts should ideally be made without or only with T5 heat treatment to avoid distortion and other problems associated with solution heat treatment. Classic applications are served by the Al-Si family in the range of 7 to 11% Silicon. Varying amounts of Mg (for Mg2Si hardening), low contents of Fe and Mn for die soldering resistance are added as well. If elongations of 10% or higher are required, then a T7 heat treatment is mandatory. In this paper two new alloys are presented offering unique benefits for the production of structure parts in HPDC. AlMg4Fe2 (Castaduct-42) offers a dispersoid hardening mechanism whi...

TRENDING:       Pete Frates       Wednesday snow       Pats thoughts       Best books 2019       Lamplighter       Christmas lights The Kia Soul looks like nothing else on the road, and yet, in its third iteration and despite a drastic redesign, it is still instantly recognizable. While other box-like cars, such as the Scion xB and Nissan Cube have come and gone, the Soul has endured. This is because Kia knows where to push the envelope, but also where to keep things conventional. The exterior styling of the Soul defies convention. The previous two generations of the Soul have had plucky styling, but this new third-generation model appears to play by its own rules. It is thoroughly futuristic and looks as much a moon rover as it does a commuter car. The boxy shape that makes it so different from other cars also ensures it has more than 62 cubic feet of cargo space, which is nearly the cargo space of a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Soul also has seemingly impossible head and legroom for a subcompact car. It allows for an upright seating position that delivers a commanding view of the road – no staring at truck wheels in the Soul! With its seating position and cargo space, the Soul ac...

Ars MacGyverica: That time we fixed a fuse box with a 6-inch nail

For the first 16 years of my life, I was an actor. Not a big-time actor, of course: I starred in school plays and local amateur productions, usually as the lanky comic sidekick or later as sonorous historical figures. Playing Osiris in a school play about the Egyptian gods was probably the peak of my thespian career. I saw a lot of weird things over the years, backstage and in dressing rooms, but unless you’re interested in men in tights or pranks involving oil-based makeup, most of them wouldn’t make any sense to recount on a technology website. One story involving a six-inch iron nail is definitely worth sharing, though. It is safe to say that my school, if it had ever been inspected properly, would’ve failed almost every electrical safety check. The building was about 200 years old and over the decades had been the victim of many hodgepodge extensions, electrification retrofits, and “ooh, all we need is a bit of electrical tape” fixes by handymen and groundskeepers. Staged theatre productions, if you weren’t aware, require lots and lots of illumination—and lights require a lot of power. A standard spotlight bulb could range anywhere from 30...

As if taking cues from a military campaign, Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow’s new film about the hunt for Osama bin Laden has begun production under a shroud of secrecy — and has immediately hit unforeseen complications. Several actors who expected to report for duty in Jordan were surprised to be ordered instead to India. And as filming began in the northern city of Chandigarh, the production was ambushed March 2 by local protesters. Animal research may yield an AIDS vaccine. Don’t jeopardize it

Johnson & Johnson recently announced plans to test an experimental HIV vaccine in the United States, South America, and Europe. It’s already conducting a clinical trial of the vaccine in Africa, with results expected in 2021. If successful, this research could yield a workable vaccine within 10 years. AIDS was once a death sentence. A quarter-century ago, HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death among Americans aged 25 to 44. But over the last four decades, scientists have made significant progress against the disease and the virus that causes it. Today, someone diagnosed with HIV can expect to live approximately as long as someone without it, thanks to the latest antiretroviral treatments. Yet HIV is still a public health crisis. More than 1 million Americans have the virus, as do about 38 million people around the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, one of the regions hardest hit by HIV, almost 1 in every 25 adults is infected with HIV. Animal research has been crucial for every major breakthrough in HIV treatment, in part because HIV is very similar to the simian immunodeficiency virus, which infects chimpanzees and macaques. Consequently, nonhuman primates were instrumental in ...

Bay Area Reporter :: Bay Area Cannasseur: Affordable cannabis gifts can fill stockings

From $5 stocking stuffer socks to $175 edible-making machines, you’ll have no trouble finding gifts for the cannabis aficionado in your life this holiday season. If you plan ahead, there are some amazing sales in December, including discounts on popular edibles, books, and clothing. Read on. When I’m looking for a cannabis gift, I always ask Marcella Sanchez, the knowledgeable and cheerful boutique operations coordinator at the Castro Apothecarium, for ideas. Sanchez, who identifies as queer, has been managing the dispensary’s gift shop for the past three years and keeps her eye out for new products, good values, and custom-made gift items. This year, the holidays discounts are better than ever, Sanchez said. In an interview with the Bay Area Reporter at the Apothecarium’s flagship store at 2029 Market Street, Sanchez suggested some newer products that she thinks would make great gifts. “I really love Hi-Fi Hops,” she said, referring to the new infused beverage made by ABX and Lagunitas. It tastes “like a light IPA” and is “fantastic” for cannabis cocktails, mixed with vodka and cranberry syrup, she said. For a gift, th...

Shopping for cookware can be a pain. There are all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials

Shopping for cookware can be a pain. There are all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials to choose from, all at varying price points. How do you know which is the best kind of frying pan to buy? It all comes down to assessing your needs and what type of cooking you do most. Let’s start with the basics and move on to look at each material in depth. There’s no such thing as a “one size fits all” pan; different cooking tasks require specific sizes. It would be overboard to fry a single egg in a 12-inch pan, and you wouldn’t want to crowd enough food for a dinner party in a 6-inch pan. For most people, it works best to have two sizes of frying pans: a large, 10- or 12-inch pan for larger tasks like searing meat and making stir-fry dishes, and a smaller, 8-inch frying pan for melting butter or cooking eggs. Unfortunately, like pan size, one frying pan material doesn’t stand out as the best for every task. We’d recommend having at least one nonstick frying pan for things like cooking eggs and making crepes, and another for searing foods like meat and vegetables. If you have a well-seasoned cast-iron frying pan, you may be able to get away with...

Our tenth annual Made in the South Awards drew hundreds of entries from potters, bakers, distillers, woodworkers, milliners, jewelers, glassblowers, and more, proving once again that Southern craftsmanship and ingenuity is alive and well. Our expert judges joined editors in the office to pore over the entries, selecting a winner and two runners-up in each of our six categories—food, drink, crafts, home, style, and outdoors—and we crowned one overall winner who will receive a $10,000 prize. Among the honorees: a Lowcountry seafood spice mix built on generations of Gullah Geechee family tradition, heirloom-quality fireplace tools hand-forged in Georgia, and a silky barrel-aged chicory liqueur from Mississippi. Special congratulations to this year’s overall winner: Covered in Cotton, run by the husband-and-wife team of Ty and Tracy Woodard. Tapping into the textile know-how of manufacturers in the Carolinas, the company produces gorgeous, cloud-soft blankets from the cotton the Woodards grow on their Darlington, South Carolina, farm. To Tracy Woodard, every bite of food and scrap of fabric has a story to tell. “People should know where the food they’re putting in their bodies and t...
