An activist group says it has gathered 40,000 signatures demanding Wasserman Schultz’ ouster and today, television viewers in her South Florida district are seeing TV and cable ads that include a recent news clip in which she calls payday lending “unfortunately … necessary.”    “What’s truly ‘unfortunate’ is that Debbie Wasserman Schultz is still refusing to put her constituents and millions of vulnerable Americans ahead of an industry that has given her more than $68,000 in campaign cash,” said Karl Frisch, executive director of Allied Progress, a liberal advocacy group.  Opponents of the measure Wasserman Schultz is co-sponsoring say it would encourage states to adopt the “Florida ...

Caterpillar rolls out next generation mini excavators

The four new machines in the 1- to 2-ton class, incorporate industry-first standard features, such as joystick steering (Stick Steer), a tilt-up canopy or cab, as well as new options, which include air conditioning and expandable undercarriages across the range. Major structures for the Caterpillar Next Generation mini excavators — upper and lower frames, track frames, boom, and stick — are modeled after their larger Cat excavator counterparts. The new model range is designed to provide expanded choices for matching machine capabilities and machine features to the applications: Minimum operating weights for the new models range from about 1,575 kg to 2,045 kg, with weights increasing to 1,760 to 2,200 kg, depending on specific machine configuration. The mini excavator dig depths reach 234 cm or 237 cm, depending on the model. As well, an available long stick increases depth to 254 cm or 257 cm. Rubber track undercarriages are standard, with steel tracks available for all models. The new mini excavator models use the Cat C1.1 engine, a three-cylinder diesel rated at 19.2 net horsepower and 21.6 gross horsepower, while meeting Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions regulations. The C1.1 ...

Tam Union district seeks voter OK for Measure B parcel tax

San Andreas High School math teacher Chris French helps student Oscar Corona during class in Larkspur, Calif. on Thursday, March 8, 2018. (Alan Dep/Marin Independent Journal) Voters in the Tamalpais Union High School District will need to decide which way to go in a tough and passionately fought battle over Measure B, a parcel tax renewal and increase plan on the March 3 ballot. If approved by two-thirds of voters, the measure would renew the existing $455 per parcel tax and add $190 — totaling $645 per parcel — for the next 10 years, effective July 1. The tax, which includes an annual 3% escalator — or automatic increase — would supersede and replace the existing Measure B parcel tax, authorized in November 2011, and the supplemental Measure J parcel tax, authorized in November 2018. Proponents say the plan is crucial to maintain quality programs in the Larkspur-based district’s three comprehensive high schools in Larkspur, San Anselmo and Mill Valley and two continuation high schools in Larkspur. If the parcel tax is not renewed and increased, the district would need to lay off 114 teachers and increase class sizes. “If we can’t maintain these strong schools, the property valu...

Is the eye massager the latest must-have beauty gadget?

Forget screen breaks to relieve tired eyes, it’s the Taiwanese trend for eye massage machines that we should be looking out for. According to an article by the Wall Street Journal the latest beauty gadget to be sweeping, or at least soothing, the beauty world if the Asian market is anything to go by (and it usually is) is the eye massage machine. Think of it as a hands-free mask which gently massages the delicate eye area to relieve tired and sore eyes. “We’ve been selling eye massagers for years with steady sales, but this year there has been a noticeable jump in demand, with sales up 30 per cent (in the first half of the year from a year earlier),” Sun Shao-qu, sales manager in Taiwan for OSIM International Ltd told the Wall Street Journal. “We believe it is because more people have tired eyes from looking at screens all day.” This beauty gizmo blends two big trends at once: not only does it talk to a world in possession of an eye-boggling obsession with smart phones and computers, it also tends to a new love of mobile beauty devices. So will it be big news in the UK? Thalgo , the makers of a brand new Eye Massage Mask, certainly think so. A...

Fiber laser cutting on a large scale The FABRICATOR STAMPING Journal The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal The FABRICATOR en Español The Additive Report The FABRICATOR The Welder The Tube and Pipe Journal STAMPING Journal The Additive Report The FABRICATOR en Español

Chicago Metal Fabricators’ new fiber laser cutter is not a gantry-style machine. The X axis is a steel structure that runs down the middle of the cutting chamber. It is designed to provide more support to the high-speed cutting head. It also allows for access across the entire length of the laser cutting bed. Nestled on the city’s southwest side, Chicago Metal Fabricators has been at work for more than 100 years. But even at this age it has shown a willingness to adopt the latest technology—most recently one of the largest fiber laser cutting machines in the U.S. If you were traveling in the fabricator’s neighborhood, which it shares with Chicago-style bungalows and other single-family homes, you might be surprised by the size of the fabricator’s facility. It covers 200,000 square feet, about half of a city block. Since its founding in 1908, the building has expanded one room at a time. Brick-walled rooms give way to other brick-walled rooms until you get to larger bays in the back of the facility. In the early 20th century, Chicago Metal Fabricators fabricated metal cabinets and duct-work, using presses that were powered by line shaft pulleys and flywheels attached near the cei...

47 Things That Make Your Home Look So Much Better For Less Than $35 On Amazon

If there’s any one thing I take some serious pride in, it’s my space. For one, I watch way too many home renovation shows. For another, I work, sleep, relax, and entertain here (I leave so rarely, my friends have started calling me the Hobbit), so for my own mental well-being, I need to love my surroundings. That said, I’m not about to drop hundreds of dollars in the decor section of a department store when I can opt for things that look expensive, but are actually shockingly affordable on Amazon. With the latter, your space gets an upgrade, your wallet gets a break, and you get a juicy secret that you can opt to share with your guests — or not. But how, exactly, does one pull that off? Well, I’ve learned that there are two ways to improve your apartment, house, or condo: The first is to pick a reasonable price-point (I’ve chosen $35 here) and vow that you won’t spend a cent over that in your quest to find products that help you love your home. When you have clear-cut, challenging boundaries, it inspires you to get a little create with your search. The second option is organizing and emphasizing the stuff you already have; a few genius organiz...

EDEKA and Apeel now also give citrus fruits a longer shelf life

Hamburg, Germany – The EDEKA Group is now further extending its commitment to fighting food waste and, in addition to avocados, now also protects oranges and clementines with the innovative “Apeel” technology. Apeel produce has a protective layer consisting of plant-based materials that slow down water loss and penetration by oxygen – two main factors contributing to decay of fresh fruit and vegetable products. Not only does Apeel lower the amount of food wasted, in many cases it also makes plastic foil unnecessary. As trading partners of USA-based Apeel Sciences in Germany, EDEKA and Netto Marken-Discount already launched avocados with Apeel’s protective coating at selected stores at the end of 2019.   Oranges and clementines are the next products to follow as part of the pilot project. In the future, Apeel’s plant-derived protective coating will also ensure longer-lasting freshness of EDEKA World Wildlife Fund oranges (1.5 kg bag), EDEKA SELECTION oranges “NavelGold” (1 kg bag) as well as of EDEKA Selection “ClemenGold” clementines (750 g bag).  Consumers will find the oranges and clementines – like the avocados – in selected EDEKA stores in parts of northern Germany and...

Every item on this page was hand-picked by a House Beautiful editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Even a cursory flip through your favorite cooking catalog reveals that we are deep in the midst of a golden age for kitchen appliances, with an ever-expanding array of products that are, in the words of some pop elder statesmen, harder, better, faster, stronger, and much cooler looking than their predecessors. Their outdoor counterparts, on the other hand, seem to have dropped the ball—technology has improved, but the design tends to stick to hulking stainless steel grills, retro backyard cookers, and unsightly pig boxes. So say, “Oh, hello!” to the multifunctional Noori stove, a pill-shaped heat-resistant cement vessel that is equal parts cooktop, barbecue grill, pizza oven, and fire pit. b A separate combustion chamber allows for clean burning of smaller logs (though you can also use charcoal for more traditional grilling) while an enamel pipe in the stove’s interior directs heat up to the surface, providing scorching heat for everything from bubbling dutch ovens to open-air kebabs without all the smoke. And a series of modular accesso...

For forty years Mr Hasan Şemsi has directed and inspired the development of Berdan Cıvata, based

For forty years Mr Hasan Şemsi has directed and inspired the development of Berdan Cıvata, based in the ancient city of Tarsus, in south-east Turkey. Here he talks about how a small business grew to be a fully integrated production operation and, remarkably candidly, of the mistakes that taught him how to achieve the highest levels of quality assurance for critical application construction fasteners. In Turkey in the 1980s, an employee who had worked for 15 years over a 25 year period was entitled to retire. That is how I was able to retire from Temel (STFA) Bolt, then the biggest bolt factory in Turkey, aged 43 and join my brother, Yunus, in setting up a 200m2 workshop in Tarsus with five employees. We realised that we had no possibility to be competitive in low strength bolts so we needed to produce high value-added bolt and nuts. At our workshop, the bolts were hot forged and the threads either machined or rolled. Then they had to be taken to a company 40km away for quenching and tempering. Then they were shipped 450km to Ankara for hot zinc coating. Finally, they were tested by a state institution in Adana, around 40km from our workshop. I already had twelve years’ experienc...

(Courtesy photo) Staff from Wyoming Natural Burger and owner Glen Troyer (right) served customers at last summer’s Yellowstone Beer Fest. (Courtesy photo) Outdoor food vendors and those selling food from trucks and mobile units have become a growing phenomenon in Cody in recent years, with almost twice as many out-of-town vendors last summer compared to 2017. In total, about 9-10 businesses regularly operated around Cody last summer. “I welcome more,” said Liz Campbell, owner of the truck 307 Pizza. “I don’t think we’re saturated by any means at this point.” The City of Cody has no regulations on local food trucks and outdoor vendors besides the requirement they must gain permission from the private property owners of where they set up shop, unless operating during an event. Out-of-county vendors must obtain a $300 transient merchant license before operating, but beyond that are subject to the same rules and required approval from the state health inspector that a regular restaurant would incur. The City of Powell has stricter regulations for food trucks with ...
